Whoa last update dates 22/10, need to fix that! As you can see, last couple years have been busy. Extensively toured, worked at some huge festivals, met a ton of people all around Europe and recorded some cool albums (expect new killer releases from Il Ponte Del Diavolo and Gotho later this year).
2024 is gonna be different, seeing me focusing more into studio jobs. Live shows are fun, but I feel the studio is my ideal environment. Last year I also updated the core of my studio, due to a computer upgrade I had to replace my old Motu 828 so I switched to a RME UfxII. It made a huge difference, both in ad/da conversion and in the number of physical inputs available, bringing it to 28 channels. Can’t wait to properly stress it out with some new productions

To a new year filled with satisfaction, cheers!

Today is a very special day, because Tons are releasing two records I worked on during the last months.

The first one is Hashension, their third studio album. It’s an important record for Tons, and I’m particularly proud of it because for the first time all of us (meaning the band & me) took part in the songwriting, and you can definitely feel it. We had a great time recording, unleashing a great dose of creativity alltogether. Compared to the old records, it’s mature. It’s heavier, it’s more psychedelic, it’s way more personal. There are all the classic elements of Tons music, but put together in a very different way, marking a step up from their previous stuff. They raised the bar, quite a lot.

The second Tons release coming out today is the 10th anniversary reissue of Musineè Doom Sessions, Vol. 1, which I originally recorded & mixed and that I remastered for this occasion. MDS has been the first official record I did all by myself at the very beginning of my career, so I kinda knew where I wanted to go soundwise but I didn’t have the mixing skills to get there. Lorenzo Stecconi did a great job pushing my mixes and making them loud, but I took this opportunity to make a new master, more faithful to the vision I had back then and I couldn’t achieve. It’s been cool to look back to these last ten years, I’m looking forward to the next ones tho!

You can find both records at Heavy Psych Sounds webstore: https://www.heavypsychsounds.com/shop.htm

Last month I spent three days at Jazz Is Dead 2021, a non-conformist jazz festival for which I’m working as head tech since 2019. Getting back to a real festival after two years has been like breathing fresh air again, even if it’s been quite tiring – need to get fit for next year!
It’s been nice meeting again amazing musicians like Tony Buck and working with one of the most influential vocalists of the last three decades, Attila Csihar, for the first italian show ever of his project Hiedelem, in which he plays with Balazs Pandi nonetheless. Also, we had the pleasure to host shows for two great local bands, Rhabdomantic Orchestra and Oaxaca.
Love and kudos to my buddies Marco Roccati & Luca Guglielmetti, when the tech team works well everything runs smoothly!

We recorded Tons’ side during lockdown, tracking everything live in an afternoon, overdubbing vocals, synths & solos. We never tried live tracking before, but having spent some time in preproducing it, everything went super smooth and the results turned out pretty well. Hear for yourself:

Extrema Ratio today released their first record, A Dangerous Method. This is one the weirdest and most extreme album I’ve ever worked on (the band consists of drums, saxophone, electronics and vocals). I spent a weekend in the band’s own studio, live recording all their tracks (apart from vocals), then we mixed it after the Covid-19 lockdown happened and sent it to James Plotkin for mastering.

I’m grateful to these guys because they brought me out of my comfort zone, tracking in a new (for me) environment with a limited amount of channels and then mixing a genre which isn’t exactly my cup of tea (no guitars or bass have been involved, even though we reamped the sax). As my first attempt on a impro/jazz record, I have to admit it came out pretty well!

Last weekend I received the Jensen Blackbird 40 I won through Tonepedia‘s giveaway. I put it into my Fender Twin Amp and had a great time jamming. I had never tried any alnico speaker before and it really impressed me: it’s quite punchy, very detailed in the high end and really deep in the low end without sounding muddy at all. Cleans are outstanding and honestly I didn’t expect it to sound so good with distortion aswell. I guess it will make a great addition to my ever-expanding speaker arsenal, thanks to Jensen & Tonepedia for this gift!
